Stop Confusing Popularity with Expertise. Viral doesn’t always mean valuable.

So, you can't deny that we're living in an era where visibility has been mistaken for credibility. The louder the voice, the bigger the following, the more polished the content… the quicker we assume, “they must know what they’re talking about.” And just like that, popularity becomes confused with expertise.

But here’s the problem: popularity is not proof of competence. It’s proof of attention. And attention, on its own, has never built a successful business, fixed broken finances, or carried anyone through real operational challenges.

As consumers, and even more dangerously as entrepreneurs, we make decisions based on what is easy to access, not what is correct. The Rise of the “Visible Expert”. We now live in a world where anyone can position themselves as an authority. If you speak confidently, show up consistently, and package your message well, you can build an audience. And once you have an audience, perception does the rest. But perception is not always performance.

The person trending is not always the one who did the work. The person with the most engagement is not always the one with the most experience. And when we blur that line, we put ourselves at risk.

Popular vs Expert: I believe it's important to know the Difference

The popular voice:

  • Is easy to find

  • Speaks well and confidently

  • Packages information beautifully

  • Is consistent and visible

  • Will tell you what sounds good

The expert:

  • Has done the work.....repeatedly

  • Has seen things fail and knows how to fix them

  • Understands nuance and complexity

  • Will tell you what you need to hear, not what sounds good

Experts don’t always trend. They don’t always simplify things into catchy soundbites. And they certainly don’t always make you feel comfortable. But they move you forward. Here’s where this becomes serious for entrepreneurs… When you build your business strategy, your financial decisions, or your growth plans based on popular advice instead of proven expertise, you are effectively outsourcing your future to people who may not have the depth to guide it. And unlike content, your decisions have consequences.

Bad advice in business doesn’t just cost you time. It costs you money, opportunities, and in many cases, your confidence. This is why so many entrepreneurs find themselves stuck. Not because they aren’t working hard… But because they are working off the wrong inputs.

A Simple Filter Before You Take Advice...... Before you take guidance from anyone, pause and ask: Has this person actually done what they’re advising on? Are they speaking from lived experience or repeating what they’ve heard? Can they demonstrate results, not just opinions? Would I trust them if there were no followers, no camera, no spotlight? Because strip away the aesthetics, and all that’s left is substance.

Not everything that trends is true. Not everything that’s viral is valuable. Not everyone speaking is qualified. In a world full of noise, your advantage is discernment. Choose your sources carefully because in business, results don’t come from what’s loud. They come from what works.
